Experian Hitwise published a report stating that in September 2011, the UK Internet population made over 785 million visits to online video websites – an increase of 36 per cent year-on-year.

YouTube is the clear leader in the online video market today, dominating with 70 per cent of all visits to online video sites. Ranking second and third are the video-on-demand (VOD) services from BBC iPlayer and ITV Player. Other leading publishers of video content include Yahoo! (61 million viewers that month), VEVO (51 million) and Facebook (45 million). Audiences are consistently strong. Digital TV Research recently announced that the global online advertising marketing is set to reach £60.6 billion by 2016, almost double what it was in 2010.

Figures recently published by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) state that ad spend online has increased by 13.5% to £2.26 billion in first half of 2011, overtaking TV as the UK's largest media in terms of spend.
